What You Will Learn:

Crape myrtle bark scale is an introduced pest to the southeastern US that continues to spread into new states and counties. Where it spreads, there is an increase in insecticide use and costs associated with maintaining and producing crape myrtles. This presentation will cover the biology of crape myrtle bark scale and the current management strategies. We will also consider recent research on the application of biological control to this invasive pest.

More About the Presenter (s):

Dr. David Held is an Alumni Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at Auburn University where he also serves as the Alabama IPM Coordinator for Alabama. His 20+ year academic career has spanned classroom, Extension and research focusing on the ecology and management of insects in turfgrass and ornamental plants in landscapes and in production. Along with his original book, Urban Landscape Entomology, he has co-authored 12 book chapters and 73 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has travelled the world from Cuba to China doing research and teaching. His program at Auburn University has secured about $11 million in federal and industry projects. The 21 students that completed degrees in his lab now work as business owners and leaders in the Green Industry, academic researchers and teachers, and policy makers in the US EPA.
